Play Therapy – Children and Teens
Your Struggling Child
Perhaps your child is aggressive towards other children and is disruptive in the classroom. Or she is shy and anxious, tending towards worrisome thoughts and acting out of fear. Or he is struggling at school to fit in and feels bullied and rejected by peers. Maybe they are underachieving in school. Perhaps you as parents are going through divorce and your child is having a hard time coping with new living circumstances. There are many reasons you might seek professional help for your struggling child when their mental health is at risk.
These days parents are facing difficult challenges with their children in our modern world, which can leave you feeling inadequate and in need of additional support. Play is a the way a child naturally expresses themselves – often using play to express what words cannot. Play allows your child to be in the present and be mindful of what is going on in themselves and around themselves. Sessions are fun when the therapist engages with you, laughs with you and plays with you! Expressive Arts Therapy is here to save the day with a room full of colorful toys.

Easing Anxiety in Children
Anxiety starts early in life. Children may present as not liking to try new things, disliking change or taking risks, seeing the negative in any situation, having physical complaints or avoiding situations/objects that they fear. We don’t just want to get rid of the anxiety – we want to work with it and help children transition from one milestone to another, as this is just part of life. I help children get to know their anxiety and how it affects the body, mind and their behaviour through Expressive Arts Play Therapy and other modaliites such as Focusing Oriented Art Therapy and Biofeedback. Through fantasy, children learn to cope with their fears and release anxiety or depression. Therapy helps children feel heard, understood and accepted.
Anxiety may manifest as:
- temper tantrums
- upset stomach
- heart racing
- panic attacks
The Many Ways Expressive Arts Therapy can help your Child
Traditional talk therapy is not as effective with kids. They may have limited verbal memory or language skills, but they still need to feel heard and understood. Children do not live in the realm of words like adults do. Some are reluctant to talk and can bottle up their emotions and repress them. They can have big emotions that have no place to go and act out with inappropriate behavior. They express themselves through the senses and symbolically, through play and motor actions. Expressive Arts Therapy engages the senses and evokes the power of the imagination to bring a sense of calm and peace to mind and body. There are many benefits to play therapy that extend to children of all ages, including:
- Using creative solutions to problems
- Developing acceptance of self and self esteem
- Developing respect and empathy for others
- Expressing emotions
- Learning new social skills and familial skills
- Developing greater responsibility
- Healing trauma
- Developing trust and faith in their abilities
- Using the imagination to promote insight and understanding
